Status of Women’s Economic Participation in India and Ways to Improve

The National Statistical Office had published the “Time Use in India 2019” reporting how men and women across the country spend their time in a day. Our analysis highlights that women’s economic participation in India is extremely low and only 20% of Women in the age of 15 to 59years are engaged in some employment activities as compared to 71% of Men. Moreover, an average Indian woman spend close to one-fifth of her day performing unpaid household activities. The International Monetary Fund states gender parity in economic participation can boost India’s GDP by 27%. We realise there is a huge opportunity to create a women led economic impact through training, private sector partnerships, policy advocacy and behaviour change campaigns.
