Some hope on World Toilet Day

While the ‘World Toilet Day’ may sound informal and frivolous even, it is nevertheless a reminder of the reality that more than 2.5 billion people world over do not have access to sanitation and are resultantly sufferers of multitudes of diseases and forgone economic opportunities (read more here). It is indeed a dismal fact that more people in the world own cell phones than toilets, something that can be blamed on inequitable distribution of wealth, and resultant lack of infrastructure (read more here).However, there does exist some hope – for example, the Gates funded Caltech innovated toilet that uses less water, cleans itself, is solar powered and turns human waste in Hydrogen and fertilizer.
