Microfinance in Bihar, India turn prostitutes into businesswomen

A number of women are in the trade of prostitution in small towns in Bihar because their mothers and grandmothers have been in this trade. For these women, taking a loan from traditional financial sources is impossible as no one will stand as their guarantor. Dreaming of a life free of prostitution for their children, a group of 8 women leveraged the NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) schemes which make a group of loan-takers co-guarantors for each other. This loan has been facilitated by the Bihar Kshetriya Gramin Bank, to start bangles and tailoring shops. Read more here.
