Cervical cancer vaccine: Improving access for prevention and control

Every year, cervical cancer causes up to 275,000 deaths, 85 per cent of which occur in developing countries. Cervical cancer is the most preventable form of cancer as it is easily detected and hence measures for prevention can be easily taken. If HPV vaccination, called Gardasil, can be made available to young girls in low and middle income countries, the estimated 430,000 deaths in 2030 can be drastically cut down. Gavi, which funds vaccines for children worldwide, has set itself a target of 30 million girls against HPV by 2020. More than 180,000 girls in developing countries are set to receive protection from Gavi. Read more here and here.
