The vicious circle of low birth weight in Pakistan

Children born with weights less than 2.5 kgs   are termed as having LBW (low birth weight). This phenomenon is the second   most common in Pakistan (32% of children born), ranking next to Mauritania   (34% of children born). According to a nurse in Pakistan, a baby she helped   deliver weighed less than 2kgs, making his chances of survival unlikely.   Weight at birth is a good indicator of a mother’s health and nutritional   status, and also of the newborn’s chances of long term health and   psychological development.
