Smart cards to insure the poor: An innovation that uses M-PESA

According to Christina Synowiec of the Centre for Health Market Innovations, selling the concept of making payment for health problems before they happen is a hard sell in developing countries, and lead to disastrous financial consequences for the poor. Two entrepreneurs from Kenya are tackling this problem in a very innovative way – by selling cards that assign accounts to people who want to save small amounts of money every day, towards unforeseen medical expenses. For their new cards, the company also receives payments from healthcare providers for reducing the paperwork, as all transactions occur using the patients’ respective cards. Read more here.
