A set of scientists from the Singapore University of Technology and Design claim that it is possible to use plasma-treated carbon-nanotubes as water filters. This device is cost effective, and efficiently takes care of impurities in briny water and not just the salts in it. The device has the advantage that it does not require electricity to work, and can easily be used to treat water in remote areas. Read more here and here.
