New discoveries related to an old problem have emerged – it is said that the European Industrial Age caused the accelerated melting of Alpine glaciers. Now the same is happening with the Himalayan glaciers, the source of drinking water for millions in India. Black carbon from inefficient stoves used by millions in rural areas, contribute to heating the atmosphere and melting of the glaciers. An innovation against this is a new cooker which is now being piloted in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. This cooker can reduce the smoke let out by 80%, and the wood intake for cooking by 50%.
