Concurrent droughts and fuel hikes have resulted in the increase in the prices of food consistently. This has demanded better agricultural outputs from the available land – leading governments and investors in a mad rush for secure land in Africa, Latin America and Asia. While increased food production is promised, the land that is taken on lease actually displaces poor farmers who have been working on these lands for many generations, and is ultimately of no real benefit to them.
