In a first of its kind move, Goldman Sachs has become the experimenter of using ‘social impact bonds’ to make profits as well as try to curb recidivism in the notorious Rikers Island jail, in New York. This move has been encouraged by NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Social impact bonds are common in Britain, but in the US, this is the first time when private investors will be encouraged to invest in projects which would otherwise have been the concern of non-profits and suchlike.
