India: Farmer in India launches new onion variety

Balwan Singh of Haryana took 17 painstaking years developing a variety of onion that yields 30 tonnes per hectare, as against the common variety that yields about 20 tonnes per hectare. It has a longer shelf life and hence reduces storage related woes for smallscale farmers. He has recently been recognized by NIF (National Innovation Foundation) in India for his efforts.
