India: ‘Financial vandalism’, and the way forward, and lessons for Haiti

August 24, 2012
Ankur Sohanpal

This post by Alex Counts, CEO and founder of Grameen Foundation talks about the Sa-Dhan’s recent conference earlier in August. The conference saw a collection of all microfinance stakeholders in the sector, and hence acted as a barometer in measuring the sentiment regarding the regulations in the country. While RBI regulations have been relatively liberal, yet another controversial clause bars MFIs over a certain size to charge the same margins which were related to their borrowing and lending activities. RBI officials sounded evasive but encouraging and even Vijay Mahajan of BASIX group conceded that the RBI policies would be amended according to the development in the field. Lastly this post features a link to Alex Count’s lecture. Read more here. Alex Counts also reflects on the learning from the Government’s involvement in microfinance in India as a potential example for Haiti in a separate post. Read the post here.
