India: Getting the off grid solar power going

Of all the developing nations present in the Doha Climate Change Conference, India was the only one with about 75 per cent of 226 million households without power. According to an IFC report, Indian households spent up to US$2.2 billion on heavily subsidized kerosene for their lighting needs. Again, India’s renewable energy ministry in 2010 set the target for off grid solar at a mere 2 GWs, while for grid connected solar at 10 GWs, undermining the potential of off grid solar. This post suggests that the price of grid connected solar power is the same as that from conventional grids, while in rural areas, solar is cheaper than its alternatives, usually diesel.
