India: Healthcare delivery for the urban poor – how rural poor aren’t the only ones deprived

In an insightful post, the problems of the urban poor, living in urban informal settlements in Indian cities, have been highlighted. India’s slums lack basic amenities of water, sanitation and hygiene, making residents more prone to illnesses than their better off counterparts. Even though this problem has been recognized a while back, there have been no effective convergence between healthcare providing agencies to streamline processes of disbursing quality healthcare. The poorest of urban Indians, who need the most urgent of help, live in what are called “non-notified” slums, which are not even recorded in some of the important nationwide healthcare surveys.
