India: Where are all the farmhands?

Indian agriculture has a new problem added to its official list – there is a dire shortage of farm hands. A farmer who earlier used to employ some 20 farm hands has now got to do with just one permanent farm hand. In fact the condition is so bad that the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in Delhi is unable to find workers for its fields. This is because of the trend of farmers migrating to construction industry jobs and NREG (National Rural Employment Guarantee) provided jobs.
