Making cell phones that do not kill

Most of the minerals that go into the smart phones of the world – iPhone, and the like, are sourced from African mines that fund warlords and encourage child labour. Bas van Abel runs an innvovative electronics company that sources its components ethically – minerals from Conflict Free Tin Initiative, Solutions for Hope, and more. For manufacturing, it chooses factories in Africa that have high standards, as certified by Labor Voices, an advocacy group. The phone started off with Ubuntu based OS, but has now moved onto the all open sourced, universal Android. It will be worth €300 or US$390. Read more here.
