The 72-hour window and ‘Saving Lives at Birth’

According to the Dr Peter Singer, in the 72-hour period around childbirth 150000 women die each year, he said, most of them from preventable causes. And in that small window, 1.6 million newborn children die. Now, a new initiative called Saving Lives at Birth, by USAID, the Gates Foundation, Government of Norway, UK-DFID, and Grand Challenges Canada, aims to use portable solar suitcases, low-cost jaundice treatment devices, and more innovations to combat this particular post birth phenomenon.
